The Vecnum Nivo is the only long-travel dropper seatpost manufactured in Germany. This dropper post from the Allgäu region boasts a lightweight design, a wide adjustment range of up to 212 millimetres and stepless travel adjustment. Our test will reveal whether these claims hold true and how the Vecnum Nivo performs in tough trail conditions.
For me, a dropper seatpost needs to be able to be lowered quite a long way, as that’s the only way to really enjoy radical trail manoeuvres. With a low stack height and the option for precise travel adjustment, the Vecnum Nivo 212 is right up my street. It offers maximum freedom of movement without adding weight, and its fully mechanical operation proved impressive in testing. With the Vecnum Nivo, the German manufacturer is positioning itself in the premium segment of dropper posts. The dropper post combines an exceptionally long travel of up to 212 millimetres with a weight of just over half a kilo, making it one of the lightest long-travel posts on the market. The Vecnum Nivo is designed for internal cable routing. It is available either as a continuously adjustable version or a four-position indexed variant. The dropper post is manufactured to extremely tight tolerances on the company’s own CNC machines in the Allgäu region. Here, the company handles every aspect in-house, from development through to testing, production, service and sales.
From a technical perspective, the Vecnum Nivo features a fully mechanical design incorporating the patented ‘shutLOC’ locking system. Unlike hydraulic locking mechanisms, this design promises high long-term reliability with minimal maintenance requirements. The tubes are made from 3D-forged 7075 aluminium, whilst titanium bolts on the seat post head further contribute to weight savings. A key feature of the Nivo is the Travelfit system. This allows the maximum travel to be reduced by up to 32 millimetres in fine increments, so that the seatpost can be precisely adjusted to the frame geometry and rider ergonomics. At the same time, the low profile of just 42 millimetres enables the full range of travel to be utilised, even on compact frames.
Fitting the Vecnum Nivo is straightforward. A little care is needed when it comes to the insertion depth. The dropper post with its long travel also extends quite far down. Cyclists should therefore check compatibility with their frame and seat height before purchasing. Vecnum provides a handy calculator for this purpose on its website. The Nivo also makes a strong impression in the workshop in other respects. The entire seatpost is superbly finished and appears to be of extremely high technical quality. If necessary, it can be dismantled for servicing using just a single 5mm Allen key. The replaceable rubber rings are a nice touch for personalisation. If you prefer a subtle look, simply stick with white.
The Travelfit function is extremely handy for adjusting the travel to suit your personal needs. Unfortunately, this requires the saddle to be removed, so making a quick adjustment at the side of the trail is rather out of the question. In reality, however, most cyclists will only use this feature for the initial setup. When switching to a different frame, Travelfit is brilliant and ensures that the expensive dropper post can be transferred from one bike to another. To accommodate different seat tube diameters, Vecnum offers high-quality, lightweight reducer sleeves that perform impressively in practice.
The Vecnum Nivo extends and retracts with absolute reliability. This means it should tick one of the most important boxes for long dropper posts. Here at the BIKE editorial office, we’ve repeatedly had very positive experiences with the durability of these German-made seatposts. Even under widely fluctuating temperature conditions – a nightmare for many a dropper post – Vecnum products have never let us down so far. The Vecnum post isn’t among the fastest. Nevertheless, the extension is fast enough in 98 per cent of cases. The noise produced by the mechanism is comparatively loud, which can be a nuisance on bulky frames. On the other hand, the low protrusion height and the long 212-millimetre travel allow you to unlock the best handling a bike has to offer. When fully lowered, there’s plenty of freedom of movement over the frame, and even extremely steep descents or challenging jump lines lose their terror.
