The US physician Dr Irwin Goldstein is responsible for one of the most exciting topics in the cycling industry in recent years: impotence! "Men shouldn't cycle. It's the most irrational sport there is," said the opinionated urologist almost ten years ago. A shocker with far-reaching consequences. Consequence number one: within three years, the number of cyclists in the USA fell by 20 per cent - an unprecedented decline. Consequence number two: Saddle manufacturers eagerly took up the issue. Specialized developed the Body Geometry saddles with the help of its "in-house doctor" Roger Minkow - and has sold more than 1.5 million of them to date. Consequence number three: other researchers produced further studies that muffled Dr Goldstein's alarm call to the point of inaudibility.
Preliminary result: It is possible to damage the blood and nerve tracts of the genitals with the wrong saddles to the point of infertility. But it is not particularly likely. For bikers, the risk of serious bruising is probably much lower than for road cyclists, who sit much flatter. The impotence panic has pretty much fizzled out.
