The saddle is one of the most important ergonomic accessories on a bike. If you only cycle short distances to the shops or to the beer garden, you will hardly have any problems sitting down. But anyone who goes on a bike tour, travelling long and bumpy routes, knows how sensitive the seat and crotch area can be. Pain in the genital area and sit bones is usually not just due to a lack of familiarisation. An ergonomically designed saddle with the right width, shape and firmness will certainly help. The new fitness saddle line from Ergon can be a solution. It is aimed at women - there is also a men's series - who like to pedal sportily and over longer distances and want to minimise sitting problems.
The cushion consists of a special orthopaedic foam, which distributes the pressure over the seat area. The whole thing is covered with a robust microfibre (plastic) cover. However, the most important details on the saddle are the V-shaped saddle flanks and the relief opening, i.e. an elongated hole in the centre. This opening has been specially designed for the female anatomy and positioned well forward. The saddle opening and saddle shape combine to relieve pressure from the sensitive genital area.
Our test rider (body weight 58 kg) tried out the Ergon SF Women over several weeks and many kilometres on a classic touring bike as well as on a mountain bike or gravel bike. She was already familiar with the specific seating problems on longer tours from other models.
That's what the MYBIKE tester says:
Even on longer journeys on touring bikes and mountain bikes, you sit really well and comfortably. The cut-out in the saddle provides noticeable pressure relief in the genital area, i.e. there is no tingling or numbness. The padding offers just the right mix of comfort and firmness. The saddle shape and seat surface support a sporty riding position.
The Ergon SF Women saddle is no miracle worker, but it is a suitable instrument for completing long tours comfortably and pain-free. And it also offers good value for money. But don't forget: It is best to have the distance between the sitting bones measured by an orthopaedically trained specialist dealer and then have the saddle selected in the right size adjusted on the bike.
