Hard men sit on hard saddles - that was the premise in cycling for a whole century. "If it pinches, grit your teeth" - the ascetics' motto. Then the American urologist Dr Goldstein painted the devil on the wall: impotence. The bikers got excited because Goldstein's research results were alarming: biking damages the manhood. The fact is: up to two-thirds of the body weight presses down on a few square centimetres of saddle when biking. The human pelvis can withstand pressure well as long as the load rests on the bony ischial tuberosities. Sensitive nerves and veins run between the ischial tuberosities. Scientists have discovered that narrow saddles press precisely on these soft tissues, squeezing nerves and strangling veins. The result: pain, numbness and a constricted blood supply to the genitals. A saddle that is too narrow is usually the reason for pain when cycling. This also applies to women. Although they are spared potency anxiety when cycling, the female genitals are similarly sensitive.
For a long time, saddles were regarded as status symbols: the narrower and harder, the more athletic. However, the human anatomy was not taken into account. From a medical point of view, classic racing saddles are unsuitable for bikers with seating problems or for long tours with a rucksack. If you are one of the lucky bikers without seating problems, you can continue to whizz down the trail on your narrow racing saddle. Although they reduce blood flow to the penis more, mountain bikers have less to fear from impotence anyway due to the constant alternation between pedalling and sitting.
