With the SYZR pedal, Speedplay claims to have found the ultimate solution for muddy conditions. The two-piece, movable cleat plays the central role here.

The threading aid of the two-part cleat guides the shoe cleanly into the pedal, even if it is very dirty. Four ceramic rollers prevent the cleat from "cold welding" to the pedal. The release angle can be adjusted from 0 to 10 degrees using two grub screws. Fitting the cleats is quite easy. However, finding the right angle requires a few test rides and patience with the fiddly grub screws. We found the freedom of movement on the foot to be comfortable and easy on the knees, but in technical passages the pedal often released the foot unintentionally. We increased the release firmness, but this made it much more difficult to get into the pedal. After around 400 kilometres, the cleats now need a little service with some grease.

Conclusion Individually adjustable pedal with top function - even under adverse conditions.

PLUS Dirt-resistant, easy on the joints, individually adjustable
MINUS Expensive, entry and exit not quite at SPD level, maintenance-intensive
