Shimano’s XT pedals have long been regarded as a reliable choice for mountain bikers who value intuitive performance and unbeatable durability. But the world of MTB is constantly changing: bikes are becoming more powerful. Trails are becoming more demanding. As a result, the demands placed on clipless pedals for off-road use are also increasing. With the new PD-M8220, Shimano aims to equip its all-round pedal for the modern trail scene. The focus is on ambitious trail and enduro riders who are looking for an SPD clip-in system with a platform that offers stability and grip even without a perfect clip-in. In detail, Shimano has made adjustments in several key areas.
The focus is on the enlarged contact surface around the click mechanism. This is designed to improve power transfer whilst also providing greater safety during technical sections, for example when the shoe is not properly engaged. This is supported by a redesigned pedal body, which is more specifically engineered to provide lateral support.
The design of the pedal body is more robust. Shimano continues to use an SPD system with entry from both sides, but combines it with a platform specifically tailored to trail conditions. It is designed to strike a balance between efficient pedalling and added stability on descents.
Shimano also remains true to its philosophy when it comes to sealing and bearing technology. The pedals are designed for long service intervals and are intended to function reliably even in adverse conditions – an important consideration for frequent riders and all-season cyclists.
Another key feature is customisability: in true Shimano style, the release force can still be individually adjusted. This allows riders to tailor the pedal’s behaviour to their riding style and intended use – from easy release on long rides to a high holding force on rough terrain.
If the new XT pedal performs even remotely as impressively as the recently launched top-of-the-range Shimano XTR model, then this classic pedal is likely to enjoy a new lease of life. In our test, the XTR PD-M9220 They stand out thanks to their solid platform, superb stability and excellent clip-in performance. The same could be said of the PD-M8220: a larger contact surface, robust construction and the familiar SPD system combine to create a pedal that is likely to appeal particularly to safety-conscious trail riders.
