With the stylish black junior pedals, Reverse relies on the technology of the high-quality Black One MTB pedals. As with its big brother, the axle has three bearings with high-quality Igus plain bearings and two multi-sealed industrial bearings. This should be sufficient even for tough use in the bike park. The aluminium cage has been weight-optimised and adapted in size to the small feet. The 307 gram aluminium pedals are fitted with eight interchangeable pins on each side, which can be easily screwed in and out with a 3-pin Allen key - after all, during the learning phase, the odd contact with the ground cannot be ruled out and a pin can quickly become bent.
The 100 x 83 millimetre cage offers sufficient space for children's feet up to size 39. The nine millimetre long pins protrude three millimetres beyond the pedal body and develop sufficient grip even for moderate use in the bike park. If you are looking for even more grip on the pedal, you can find longer pins in the spare parts store on the Reverse website. According to the manufacturer, the Black One Jr. MTB pedal can also be fully serviced - corresponding spare parts are also available in the online shop.
Shortly before the first lift ride at the last bike park visit, there was some disillusionment - the youngsters even shed a few tears - the pedal cage slipped two centimetres outwards on the axle. A check in the workshop revealed that a bearing had shifted. The pedal was defective for the time being, but the day was saved by a smart hire bike.
In conversation with Peter Schmid, Managing Director of Reverse, we have since been able to clarify the cause of the defect. The same problem had occurred with a team rider. The culprit was a nut inside the pedal that holds the two industrial bearings in place. It was not sufficiently tightened and became loose over time. Fortunately, there was no danger to the rider because the axle itself is secured by a screw on the outside.
Reverse has now recalled all Black One Jr. pedals sold to date for servicing and repaired them. As a small consolation, the serviced MTB pedals came with a pair of grips from the Youngstar series free of charge. We say: This is what exemplary service looks like!
