The Atac system from Mavic on the Crossmax XL pedals impresses with its silky-smooth click-in and good self-cleaning properties.

Based on the Time-Atac platform, Mavic is adding pedals to its range for the first time. The cage made of a carbon-nylon mix and the titanium axle reduce the weight to a light 320 grams. The click mechanism consists of two springs and cannot be adjusted in hardness. On the other hand, the foot can move five millimetres sideways and five degrees in angle, allowing it to find the optimum position on the pedal very quickly. The cleat mounting allows the release angle to be varied between 13 and 17 degrees, whereby 13 degrees was sufficient for us. Compared to the SPD system, clicking into the pedal is particularly soft and smooth. The release is less defined, but is clearly noticeable. The cage cleans itself very well, but does not fit every shoe profile perfectly. Despite some contact with the ground, the carbon cage proved to be pleasingly stable.
