With the Breach CEC, the Oberammergau-based components manufacturer is expanding its flat pedal range to include a more affordable model. The new Ambit flat pedal retains the platform shape of the existing Breach range, but features a pedal body made from composite material and does not include the so-called ‘Rotation Brake’. The price: €49.95. We’ve got all the details and compare the new pedals with the competition.

Conclusion by BIKE editor Max Fuchs

Mountain biking is no longer a cheap hobby. Even with flat pedals, prices of well over 100 euros for high-quality models are now commonplace. This makes it all the more welcome that Ambit is now offering its tried-and-tested Breach platform and features such as the low-maintenance Service Screw System in a composite pedal for just 49.95 euros.

What’s particularly exciting is that, with this price, the Breach CEC actually undercuts many of its established competitors. For example, the Race Face Chester Composite around 70 euros, that SQlab 50X Flat It even costs around 80 euros. Hopefully we’ll soon be able to test for ourselves whether the Ambit pedal can hold its own against the market leaders in terms of grip, durability and bearing quality. In terms of price, however, the Breach CEC is already making a strong statement.

Why do manufacturers opt for composite pedals?

On the Breach CEC, the pedal body is made from a composite material – specifically, glass-fibre-reinforced plastic. Compared to aluminium, this material is cheaper to manufacture yet still withstands hard impacts from stones surprisingly well. Instead of deep scratches or dents, only superficial scuff marks usually appear. The downside is that, when it comes to long-term durability, plastic pedals generally cannot compete with light-alloy variants.

What’s new at Breach CEC

The Breach CEC is aimed at trail, enduro and bike park riders looking for a classic flat pedal with a direct riding feel. At its heart is a composite pedal body, combined with a CrMo steel axle. Despite its simpler construction, the pedal is designed to offer the same tried-and-tested contact area as the more expensive Breach models.

Ten interchangeable pins on each side, each four millimetres high, provide the necessary grip. The pedal measures 111 x 99 millimetres, is 14 millimetres high at the outer edge and 18 millimetres high at the axle, and, according to the manufacturer, weighs 333 grams per pair.

Also included is the Service Screw system, already familiar from the higher-end Breach models. It is designed to simplify maintenance and allow quick access to the pedal’s internal components.

The Breach CEC does not replace the existing Breach models, but rather complements the range as a more affordable alternative. The flat pedal is available in black, grey and orange. It is priced at 49.95 euros.
