For years, it was clear that if Nino Schurter clicked into the pedals at the start of a World Cup race, he would click out as the winner at the end of the event. It was a similar story with the pedals for mountain bikers themselves. Regardless of which model the market leader Shimano sent us to test, it was already clear beforehand that the pedal with the SPD mechanism would win the comparison. In terms of quality, reliability and handling, no manufacturer has yet been able to hold a candle to the Japanese. The competition has mostly only been able to shine by tweaking the weight for tuning fans or colourfully anodising the pedal bodies for colour fetishists. But in the World Cup, a new generation of riders is currently getting into the saddle to push dominator Schurter out of victory lane.
And what about MTB pedals? Other manufacturers could soon be providing the best connection between rider and bike. Especially when it comes to trail pedals, which are also ridden by enduro bikers, manufacturers are pushing onto the market with some convincing solutions. We put six models with an enlarged footprint up against Shimano's classic XT trail pedal on the cranks.
