It is not only the price of the new Syncros wheels that is beyond good and evil and polarises to the maximum. The Silverton SL wheels also stand out in terms of appearance and the maximum use of carbon.

There are already a few MTB wheels with carbon rims on the market. However, if you are looking for full carbon wheels that are made entirely of the lightweight material, apart from a few parts, the options are thinner. The new Syncros Silverton SL belong to the rare breed with maximum use of carbon, which, however, pushes the price (3500 euros) extremely high.

Although the wheelset looks similar to a conventional wheel, it is laminated in one piece from carbon. But why all the effort? At 1250 grams with a rim width of 26 millimetres, the wheels are very light, but should also impress with more agile handling, better acceleration and more precise steering.

Thanks to the special manufacturing method, the carbon spokes are firmly connected to the rim and the hub body. Compared to tested benchmark wheels, Syncros promises 35 per cent lower inertia, 100 per cent higher torsional stiffness and 30 per cent higher lateral stiffness.

As no spoke nipples need to be threaded into the rim, the rim well is already completely closed without rim tape and is therefore suitable for tubless use.Photo: Peter Nilges As no spoke nipples need to be threaded into the rim, the rim well is already completely closed without rim tape and is therefore suitable for tubless use.

The one-piece construction should also be very stable, but makes it impossible to replace individual components such as rims or spokes in the event of damage. BIKE will be testing the new wheelset in detail in one of the next issues. It should be available from autumn 2018.
