Anyone can ride in a straight line - but when it comes to a cross-country ride where the mountain bike and rider are really put to the test, one thing in particular has to stand up to the test: the wheels and the spokes. Newmen has now presented the new Phase 30 Vonoa carbon wheels for such requirements - they are designed to be even lighter and yet more robust than their predecessors.

Newmen Phase 30 Vonoa: Carbon MTB wheels for tough terrain

Thanks to the combination of the Phase Light carbon rim and Vonoa carbon spokes, the XC wheels weigh just 1160 grams (29 inches). The trail version with a more stable rear wheel is also only 90 grams heavier. This makes the Phase 30 Vonoa MTB wheels one of the lightest wheelsets in the 30 mm class.

Despite their light weight, according to Newmen they are not afraid of tough, rough rides on hard terrain. The new wheels are 30 per cent stiffer, but also 40 per cent lighter than before. So what's the secret behind the Newmen formula for the new Phase 30 wheels?

Fewer spokes, classic & proven design approach

The stiff Vonoa carbon spokes weigh just 2.8 grams each. For over two years, the aero version of the Vonoa spokes has been convincing in Newmen road bike sets and has also proved its worth with the Intermarché-Wanty World Tour team. For the new Phase 30 Vonoa, Newmen uses round Vonoa spokes in the classic straight-pull design for the tough MTB requirements.

Due to the significantly higher tensile strength and stiffness of carbon spokes compared to conventional steel spokes, 24 spokes per wheel are sufficient to achieve a perfect balance of stiffness and comfort. In addition, the hub body for the Phase 30 Vonoa has been further optimised and the weight reduced.

Nevertheless, the Fade CS hub houses the same tried-and-tested technology inside and boasts the same features: low weight, impressive durability and a quiet freewheel noise.

In the event of a service or defect, handling is exactly the same as with classic steel spokes. The Vonoa carbon spokes can also be centred or replaced individually in the event of a broken spoke. As with all carbon rims, Newmen also offers a lifetime crash replacement (50 %).
