The German carbon manufacturer Bike Ahead is known for lightweight construction without compromising on unique designs and detailed solutions. The Three-Zero-XC wheels are no exception in this respect. How do the carbon wheels with the special rim shape perform in laboratory and practical tests?

Topics in this article

At 1899 euros, the new Bike Ahead Three-Zero-XC wheels are easy on the wallet in the high-end class, but do not have a record weight. The wheelset we weighed weighs 1417 grams. This is reflected in a slightly higher inertia. Due to the extremely wide rim flanges, the rim is a full 42 millimetres wide with a rim width of 30 millimetres and protrudes significantly beyond the tyre wall.

The special design is intended to effectively protect the tyre sidewall in the event of punctures and thus prevent defects. Thanks to the wide rim flange, the tyre sidewall cannot be punctured so easily, which according to the manufacturer enables lower tyre pressures. Despite a medium lateral stiffness, the wheelset feels very direct and stiff. The impact resistance is good and absolutely sufficient for the intended area of use. The wheelset is also available in a 45 gram lighter SL version and a reinforced Enduro version.
