Workshop: Tidying up the cockpit
Super-Dan, the saviour of all amateur mechanics: the BIKE mechanic solves every problem with his super skills. This time he shows you how to untangle tangled cables and clamps on the cockpit.

Some may think I'm obsessive, but the order of the T-shirts in my wardrobe follows a very specific order. Many a bike manufacturer could do with a similar organisation system. Nowadays, bike cockpits sometimes look like the back of a computer control centre: a loose tangle of cables, clamps and levers. With fork and shock lockout, telescopic dropper post remote and the shift and brake lever position, up to seven cables and clamps overload the handlebars and probably also some of the rider's brain convolutions. Clever solutions are now available, often directly from the manufacturer, which untangle the tangle of cables and create space on the cockpit. For example, three levers can be attached to one clamp on a Matchmaker clamp with shift, brake and remote levers for the Rock Shox Reverb. Shimano also ensures a tidy look with its i-Spec clamp. Many brake manufacturers also offer suitable gear lever adapters as accessories.

Super-Dan shows you the possible combinations:

1. the Sram Matchmaker combines all standard Sram trigger shifters with Sram brake levers on one clamp. A set of the current Matchmaker X costs 55 euros and can be mounted on the left or right. First, unscrew the shift lever from the handlebar clamp. Then remove the clamp from the handlebars.
