Screwdriver tips: Checking and maintaining the headset

To ensure that the headset runs smoothly and easily even after many kilometres through dirt and moisture, it deserves a regular maintenance session. We show you how to do it.

MAINTAIN TAX RATE

You will need these tools: 1. Allen key, 2. assembly paste, 3. torque spanner

Clamp the bike in an assembly stand and remove the front wheel. Then unscrew the headset cap using an Allen key.

Loosen the stem bolts until the stem can be easily removed from the steerer tube. You do not have to unscrew the screws completely.

Hold the fork firmly with one hand and pull off the stem. Then loosen the spacer, cone and clamping ring etc. and put the parts to one side in an organised manner.

You now have unrestricted access to the bearings and can adjust the upper and

and the lower bearing from the bearing seats and put them to one side.
