Professional cockpit
A weedy cockpit spoils the look of any bike. With little effort and for little money, the handlebars can be transformed into an elegant professional control centre.

How to keep your handlebars tidy:

Widen handlebars

Single-sided screw grips such as the Specialized Grappler (19.95 euros) create space on the handlebars. The grip is stiff enough that the handlebars can easily be widened by about one centimetre. This creates space in the centre of the handlebar and may save you having to buy new handlebars.

Matchmaker & Co.

Tidy look
The SRAM Matchmaker clamp attaches the brake and trigger shift levers together on just one clamp. In addition to the tidy look, the controls are always perfectly accessible (25 euros).

Shimano shifter

Removing the display
Shimano does not currently offer a common clamp for the shifter and brake like SRAM. However, if you remove the gear indicator from the shifter, you can mount the lever on both sides of the brake lever. With the indicator, the shifter only fits inside the brake lever on the handlebars.

Setting the fitting

Incline
Stand on your bike in the downhill position and lean your body against a wall. Turn the brake levers so that the imaginary extension of your forearms passes directly through the brake lever. Also adjust the lever width of the brake lever so that your fingers remain in a relaxed, slightly bent position.
