The lighter, the faster. Race bikes in particular are all about weight. Bontrager wants to save weight by combining a carbon handlebar and stem.

Scott has made a start with its Syncros accessories brand, Canyon has followed suit. Handlebar-stem units made of carbon - as used in many racing bikes - are said to be just as stable as conventional handlebars and stems, but weigh less. They also make every bike an eye-catcher and are very popular with tuning fans.

Trek's subsidiary Bontrager has created a one-piece MTB cockpit with the RSL handlebar-stem unit, which can be used to equip not only cross-country bikes, but also trail bikes and even enduro bikes. Bontrager offers the unit in various lengths and widths. The carbon unit is designed to fit both conventional headsets and Trek's Knock-Block using the adapters supplied.

To attach a light or a bike computer, Bontrager offers additional adapters, which should maintain the tidy appearance of the handlebar-stem unit. Depending on the version, the entire handlebar-stem unit should cost between 214 and 250 grammes and is suitable for 449,99 Euro to have.
