Ergonomics specialist Ergon is expanding its range of handlebar tapes to include the OrthoCell models and a sustainable version made from walnut shell flour.
Is handlebar tape just handlebar tape, is handlebar tape just handlebar tape? No, Ergon’s approach is truly extraordinary, and this is even more true of the BT GreenLab. By adapting cushioning materials from the field of orthopaedics and incorporating natural waste materials, the manufacturer is setting new functional and environmental standards in the accessories sector.
When riding on uneven terrain or over long distances, hands, wrists and forearms are subjected to significant vibrations. Gravel cyclists know this all too well. In this context, vibration damping therefore plays an even greater role than it does for pure road cyclists. To absorb localised stress and prevent fatigue, accessories manufacturer Ergon has drawn on materials from the medical technology sector for its new handlebar tape ranges. Both the standard BT OrthoCell range and the eco-friendly BT GreenLab variant have been developed to absorb shocks during road and gravel cycling and to ensure a secure grip in a variety of weather conditions. For both road and gravel cycling, the ergonomics specialist offers its handlebar tape in a range of thicknesses.
The BT OrthoCell is made entirely – from the surface right through to the core – from a foam manufactured in Germany, which is originally used in orthopaedics. The material is characterised by uniform pressure distribution, high resilience and a dimensionally stable structure. The range is available in two thicknesses: the 3-millimetre-thick ‘Allroad’ version is aimed at tarmac riders, whilst the 4-millimetre-thick ‘Gravel’ version is available for gravel riders, offering greater inherent damping. Both straps feature a textured surface to ensure sufficient grip even in wet conditions with minimal effort required to maintain traction.
Through the GreenLab initiative, Ergon is also developing a product variant with an enhanced focus on sustainability. In the BT GreenLab Allroad, up to 30 per cent of micronised walnut shells are mixed into the OrthoCell foam. This renewable raw material not only gives the handlebar tape a natural colour, but, according to the manufacturer, is also said to provide antibacterial properties. With a tape thickness of 3 millimetres, the cushioning and load-bearing capacity are said to remain on a par with the standard model, despite the altered material mix.
