When people think of ergonomic handlebars, they often picture large, wing-like designs which, whilst offering comfort, look more like those on a trekking bike than a trail bike. It was precisely this balancing act that Ergon at the GMA Avoid. The new grip is designed to reduce pressure peaks, improve hand positioning and, at the same time, provide sufficient control for challenging trails.
Designed with the realities of modern mountain bikers in mind
Very few mountain bikers these days stick to just one discipline. An after-work ride on flowing trails, a long day’s ride with plenty of elevation gain, or technical sections with root-covered ground and rocky steps are often all part of the same ride. The GMA was developed precisely for this wide range of uses. It is aimed at all-mountain, trail and e-MTB riders who are looking for a grip that offers both comfort and control in equal measure.
Ergonomics reimagined
Even at first glance, the GMA stands out from traditional round grips. The grip body has a slightly conical shape and tapers slightly towards the centre. This gives the thumb and the palm a more direct feel for the ground, whilst the back of the hand benefits from greater contact area and cushioning. The diameter increases from 29 mm on the inside to 31.5 mm on the outside.
The new thumb recess deserves special attention. It ensures a more uniform contact surface between the hand and the grip and supports various grip positions on technical terrain. At the same time, it is designed to relieve pressure on the base joint of the thumb and make it easier to operate gear levers, dropper post remotes or e-MTB controllers. The design is complemented by a subtle outer stop, which minimises the risk of the hand slipping off.
In everyday driving, these details result in a comfortably natural hand position that works unobtrusively but noticeably helps to reduce strain.
Cleverly laid-out functional zones
A distinctive feature of the GMA is its division into different functional areas. Whilst many handles rely on a uniform surface, Ergon takes a significantly more differentiated approach.
The upper is designed entirely with cushioning in mind. Special breaks in the surface structure increase the material’s flexibility and allow for better absorption of impacts and vibrations. This can help reduce strain on the hands and forearms, particularly on long rides or rough trails.
The underside, on the other hand, is designed to achieve the exact opposite: maximum grip. Raised grip ridges and integrated finger guides are the direct result of the Gravity division’s experience and significantly increase friction between the hand and the grip. The result is a secure grip, even when the trail gets rough or conditions are wet.
Gravity Control Rubber: Soft, responsive and durable
When it comes to materials, Ergon relies on its proprietary ‘Gravity Control Rubber’ compound. This was developed specifically for modern trail, enduro and gravity riding. The compound is designed to effectively absorb impacts whilst, at the same time, providing sufficient stability to ensure that steering inputs are translated precisely.
The quality of the materials is also a positive feature. The compound is latex-free, PAH-free, REACH-compliant and, according to Ergon, has been tested for harmful substances. Production takes place in Germany using short supply chains, which further supports the principle of sustainability.
GMA FAT: Even more suspension for long days in the saddle
As well as the standard version, Ergon also offers the GMA as GMA FAT The larger diameter is primarily designed for riders with large hands, but may also appeal to cyclists who prefer a particularly firm grip.
Thanks to its larger cross-sectional area, the FAT offers even better vibration damping. This can make a noticeable difference to comfort, particularly on long tours, e-MTB rides or alpine trail adventures. At the same time, the shape remains identical to that of the standard GMA, so the ergonomic benefits are fully retained.
Practical details for everyday life
One small but well-thought-out detail is the integrated ‘UP’ scale. It makes it easier to position the grip correctly on the handlebars. As ergonomic features such as the thumb recess and outer stop only work optimally when correctly positioned, the marking helps you to quickly find your preferred position.
An internal CNC-machined aluminium clamp ensures easy fitting. This reduces weight, holds the handle securely in place and allows for straightforward removal.

Conclusion: Ergon’s most versatile MTB grip to date?
With the GMA Ergon has launched a handle that takes a far more understated approach to ergonomics than many of its previous models. The new shape noticeably reduces strain on the hands during long rides, without drawing undue attention to itself. At the same time, the riding feel remains surprisingly direct. Rather than aiming for maximum damping, the GMA provides plenty of feedback from the terrain, making it a good match for modern trail and all-mountain bikes. A little more texture on the underside and slightly greater inherent damping would have improved the grip. Nevertheless, Ergon has succeeded in creating a compelling all-round grip that will particularly appeal to riders who have found classic Ergon grips too comfort-oriented up to now.
