Bike park, dirt biking, high speed, jumping, berms - what provides a lot of adrenaline and riding fun when biking is pure stress for the components. The still young brand Ambit from Oberammergau has dedicated itself to precisely this type of biking. The aim is to produce reliable, well thought-out and stylish components for precisely this purpose. The brand, which is part of the Sport Import consortium, is launching onto the market with a stem and a set of flat pedals from a regionally produced limited edition.
Let's start with two components from Ambit's Limited Edition series. These components are almost exclusively produced in Germany and also as regionally as possible. They also offer additional features. Later, Ambit will also offer simpler components with fewer features, which will then be produced more cheaply in the Far East. However, the quality standards should remain comparable. In addition to pedals and stems, Ambit is also planning chain guides, rims and handlebars. The first products are expected to appear on the market in 2024.
The star of Ambit's line-up so far is the Haxn Hoita flat pedal (Bavarian for "foot holder"). Manufactured one hundred per cent in Bavaria and almost entirely in the immediate vicinity of the company's Oberammergau site, the pedal is designed to appeal particularly to fans of high air resistance. The Ammergau-based company has installed a rotation brake for this purpose. This can be used to adjust how hard or easy the pedal is to turn. The pedal should therefore remain in the correct position even if the foot leaves the platform during a jump or trick.
Otherwise, at 414 grams (in size M, EMTB measurement), the rather heavy aluminium pedal is primarily optimised for durability. For particularly user-friendly maintenance, the axle can be removed for servicing after loosening three locking screws. An additional seal is designed to prevent premature wear. In addition to the Ambit pins with Torx head, classic grub screws can also be used. The base is inclined outwards by one degree. This is intended to improve power transmission and prevent premature fatigue. This technology, which tilts the foot slightly outwards, is already familiar from various ergonomic insoles. The local production is stylish, but the price of 229 euros is correspondingly ambitious.
In addition to the pedals, there is also a stem, which also comes from the Limited series. The Lenka Hoita is also manufactured in Germany and, in keeping with the brand's gravity claim, is also approved for downhill use. For the time being, there are two short lengths, the stem is only compatible with the thicker handlebars with a diameter of 35 millimetres.
