6 MTB grips in the test
There's nothing worse than slippery MTB grips when the handlebars twitch in your hands during a wild singletrack ride. These six rubbers give you full control over your mountain bike.

Drenched in sweat, I come to a halt at the bottom of the stairs. With every step, the damp foam rubber grips have turned a few degrees forwards - impossible to grab. I was a hair's breadth away from going over the handlebars in a leapfrog. There was a very simple solution to my problem: screw-on grips. A few extra grams would make a world of difference to riding safety. It hardly makes a difference whether the grips are clamped on one or both sides. They always offer more grip on the handlebars. Only the large screw on the Ergon and Syntace grips makes mounting a little easier. Which thickness you choose is a matter of taste. The diameters of the test models are between 29 and 33 millimetres. During the test rides, the slimmer grips also gave the testers with large paws a more direct feel on the handlebars. The rubber compounds vary from sticky and firm to softly damped. Ergon, Race Face and Syntace use different compounds on the top and bottom. So the motto is: get the foam rubber off the handlebars, because non-slip means safety.
