The sober facts about the new Shimano XTR (presented on 25.5.2018) could already be seen in the Japanese company's first press release: Like Sram's Eagle series, Shimano's new top MTB drivetrain - the M9100 - combines twelve sprockets into one cassette. The gradation is almost identical. With 10 to 51 teeth, the Shimano XTR from 2018 outperforms its competitor Sram by just one tooth in the lightest mountain gear. Even though the new XTR will be available with a double chainring as an alternative, the 1x12 version clearly follows the visible trend towards single chainrings - some frames no longer provide for derailleur mounting.
