The press release came at short notice, without advance notice and not even on 1 April. After the first mechanical Transmission circuits were introduced, there is now an upgrade kit available to turn the cable-activated shifters into AXS wireless shifters. The upgrade kit, which consists of an AXS-capable rear derailleur body, an AXS battery and an AXS Pod Controller, will cost 650 euros >> available here*.
As a reminder: with a price of just 730 euros, the Eagle 90 Group (rear derailleur, gear lever, crank, bottom bracket, cassette, chain) is significantly below the level of a GX AXS Transmission, which is available for around 1300 euros. The Eagle 70 is even in the region of 545 euros, which is slightly more than a Sram NX Eagle groupset. From now on, the Eagle 70 is the cheapest way to ride a transmission drivetrain.
Together with the upgrade kit, you'll have to pay around € 1200 (based on current RRP) to convert the Eagle 70 into an AXS wireless drivetrain. This is not really worth it, unless you clicked on the wrong product when buying online or have had a change of heart and want to change gears electronically from now on. Be that as it may: With the upgrade kit, Sram at least offers the full range of options.
Simply unscrew the cage assembly and the fixing bolt from your mechanical Eagle 90 or 70 rear derailleur and mount it on the new GX Eagle AXS Transmission rear derailleur body of the upgrade kit. The supplied Eagle T-Type PowerLock is also included so that you can remount the existing chain with a clear conscience.
