Shimano vs. Sram: MTB chains in comparison
The chain is the most pitiful component on a mountain bike. It is constantly confronted with the full force of the legs. An overview of the models from Sram and Shimano.

Nevertheless, it has to shift gears precisely and transmit the drive forces - and it is usually covered in dirt. This is precisely why it is one of the classic wear parts. Its durability is the most important decision criterion. We do not yet have any meaningful measurements for the eleven-speed chains, but Shimano is clearly leading the competition for the lowest wear in ten-speed chains. None lasts longer than the Shimano XT chain (HG-95). Shimano chains are also cheaper across the board than their Sram counterparts. When fitting, however, it is important to note that all Shimano chains are directional for better shifting performance. The embossed lettering must be on the outside.

The Shimano chains are directional and require a special locking rivet. The higher-quality groupsets also have a particularly durable Sil-Tec coating. Shimano chains can be recognised by the abbreviation "CN".

Chain lock or rivet pin?

Even if not recommended by the manufacturers, you can also combine Shimano chains with chain locks and use the Sram chain locks several times.
