New Effigear gearbox even shifts under load
Rohloff, Hammerschmidt, Pinion. There have been many attempts to establish gearing on mountain bikes. Now Cavalerie is adding new salt to the soup with its Effigear gearbox.

It was Greg Minnaar's legendary Honda downhill bike that inspired Guy Cavalerie to build his own Effigear transmission for mountain bikes. In 2003, the wiry Frenchman drew the first sketches for a revolutionary gearbox during a sleepless night and applied for the first patents in the same year. The development to market maturity took over ten years, but the result is impressive. The Effigear gearbox is not only lightweight, but is also the only gearbox known to us that can shift into heavier gears under full load. With Pinion gearboxes, for example, you have to take a lot of pressure off the crank to be able to shift gears.

The pivot point of the rear triangle is located directly on the drive chainring, which is why the chain length of the Anakin does not change during compression. Even a defect-prone chain tensioner is superfluous with the Effigear gearbox.Photo: Ludwig Döhl The pivot point of the rear triangle is located directly on the drive chainring, which is why the chain length of the Anakin does not change during compression. During a short test ride at the Ziener BIKE Festival in Willingen, the gearbox was convincing. The Effigear gearbox also requires you to take pressure off the pedal to change to easier gears, but you can pre-select the right gear under load. The gearbox has new gears and a range of 440 per cent. Shifting is done with a conventional Sram gear lever, either as a trigger or twist shifter. Coulangi Benoti came ninth at the Downhill World Cup in Lourdes - on a bike with an Effigear gearbox.

Pinion and Rohloff gearboxes must be controlled by two cables in order to change gears. Effigear dispenses with the second cable and instead installs a long external spring that helps to change gears. The advantage: The French can use a normal Sram 9-speed gear lever (Trigger or Gripshift).Photo: Ludwig Döhl Pinion and Rohloff gearboxes must be controlled by two cables in order to change gears. The French even want to offer custom geometries in the future. The frame without gearbox weighs approx. 3.3 kilos, costs 3800 euros (with shock and gearbox) and is manufactured in France.Photo: Ludwig Döhl The frame shape of the Anakin is kept very simple. The Effigear has nine gears and, at 440 per cent, a slightly higher range than Sram's 1x11 drivetrains with a 10-42 cassette. The complete unit weighs 1.5 kilos and is operated with a normal Sram gear lever. Heavier gears can even be engaged under full load. For lighter gears, you have to briefly take pressure off the crank.Photo: Ludwig Döhl The Effigear has nine gears and, at 440 per cent, a slightly higher range than Sram's 1x11 drivetrains with a 10-42 cassette. Effigear gearbox currently only on Cavalerie bikes

If you want to enjoy the new gearbox, you currently have to buy a bike from Cavalerie. Nicolai launched a small series of downhill bikes in 2013, but quickly discontinued production. Since then, Guy Cavalerie has been offering his own enduro MTB, a freerider and a downhill bike. The design of the frames produced in France is functional. On the Cavalerie website equipment and colour can be individually configured. We are looking forward to a first detailed test.

The Cavalerie Falcon downhill bike shows that gearboxes don't always have to be heavy. With an aluminium frame and Effigear gearbox, the bike weighs 16.8 kilos ready to ride.
