New gear hub from Norway
14 gears, hydraulic shift levers and compatible with thru axles: The new Kindernay gear hub should appeal to mountain bikers in particular who value low-maintenance technology.

Kindernay announced its new gearbox last year, and now the Norwegians are starting to sell it. The facts sound tempting for anyone who is no longer happy with their conventional derailleur gears. In addition to the reduced maintenance intervals, the 14-speed gearbox impresses with a gear range of 543 % (roughly equivalent to a conventional 2x11 gearbox) and the option to swap the wheel around the gearbox.

If you want to build a second wheelset for your bike, you don't have to buy a second gearbox, just a second hub shell. The gearbox can be separated from the rest of the wheel in a few simple steps and is compatible with any frame with a 12-millimetre thru axle.

Hydraulic Kindernay shifters for the 14 gears

Gears are shifted with two hydraulic shift levers, up on the left and down on the right. According to the manufacturer, the gearbox with shift levers weighs 1400 grams. There is no German distributor yet. For customers who have the necessary small change, the Norwegians will send a package with the hub to Germany for the equivalent of 1600 euros. www.kindernay.com

As is usual with gearboxes, you have to take the weight off the pedal to change gear. The Kindernay K'ay XIV transmission has 14 gears, 543 per cent gear range and weighs 1400 grams with shifters (manufacturer's specification). Compatible with 10 and 12 millimetre thru axles, it can be retrofitted to all mountain bikes with 135/142 mm rear suspension. There is also an extra-long version for fat bikes.Photo: Ludwig Döhl The Kindernay K'ay XIV transmission has 14 gears, 543 per cent gear range and weighs 1400 grams with shifters (manufacturer's specification).
