DT Swiss EXP: new toothed disc freewheel
With the EXP freehub, DT Swiss heralds a new generation of toothed disc freehubs. BIKE has already been able to ride the new hubs.
In 1994, DT Swiss developed its first own hub, the legendary DT Hügi. The Swiss company has now presented its latest innovation at the BIKE Festival on Lake Garda: the freehub Ratchet EXP . Thanks to the new system, the DT Swiss 180 hub should be lighter, allow stiffer wheels, work more precisely and be easier to maintain. The DT Swiss patent for a toothed disc freehub in which the toothed discs are preloaded by springs on both sides has just expired. However, the new generation of EXP freewheels does without this well-known feature. The new technology is being used for the first time in the Swiss company's lightweight 180 hubs.

Technology in detail

To make servicing as easy as possible, the new hubs can also be disassembled and reassembled without tools. This means that the freehub body can be replaced in seconds. The bearing spacing on the rear wheel axle has also been increased for greater rigidity. One of the bearings is located directly behind the toothed disc. For this reason, DT can now only install one spring to bring the toothed discs together. A great side effect: the reduced components ensure less weight. With 36 teeth, the engagement angle is 10 degrees.

Prices and weights

The new 180 hub set with EXP freehub and ceramic bearings will cost 800 euros (275 euros front/525 euros rear). Thanks to the weight reduction, the rear DT Swiss hub weighs just 185 grams.

First driving impression

We have already been able to ride the new hubs for three weeks. The freewheel has worked absolutely reliably and without any problems so far.
