Installing volume spacers on MTB shocks - instructions
If you don't use the full suspension travel on your MTB fully despite the optimum setting of your shock, or if you constantly bottom out, you can adjust the spring characteristic curve with volume spacers. We show you how.

Before you think about replacing the volume spacers, the basic setup of air pressure, rebound and compression must be correct. We explain how to set up your suspension correctly in the article "Correctly adjusting MTB suspension" including video. If you don't use the full spring travel or constantly bottom out, you can adjust the spring characteristic of your shock with volume spacers. The spacers (called tokens at Rockshox) change the volume of the air chamber. This allows you to adjust the characteristic curve of the shock. If the rear suspension is constantly bottoming out despite the correct setup, it lacks progression and you need more volume spacers. On the other hand, if you don't use the full suspension travel, it is too progressive. In this case, you need to remove volume spacers.
The Tuning with volume spacers or tokens is possible with all air shocks from Fox, Rock Shox & Co. possible. Installation and removal is easier than most people think.

We show you how to install volume spacers in a Rockshox suspension. The differences to Fox shocks are so small that you can also adapt the air chambers of Fox suspension elements with our instructions. The steps remain the same.

You must pay particular attention to this when converting:

Which or how many volume spacers you can install in your shock depends on the manufacturer and model. The picture shows a set of volume spacers for Fox DPS shocks.
