Steel spring, open oil bath and massive suspension travel by the standards of the time - the Marzocchi Bomber Z1 with the iconic M triple clamp was the ultimate among downhill enthusiasts for a long time. Now the Bomber is back in a new guise. And it remains true to its line. 36-millimetre stanchions, up to 180 millimetres of suspension travel: the fork feels most at home in enduro bikes. Other facts: 27.5 or 29 inches, from 150 or 130 (29er) millimetres of suspension travel, Boost installation dimensions. The red beauty was brought to life by suspension giant Fox, now the parent company of Marzocchi. So it's no surprise that Fox technology is inside the Bomber. The open oil bath has given way to a Fit-Grip damper cartridge, which we know from inexpensive Fox models, and instead of a steel spring, an air spring with an extra-large Evol air chamber ensures smooth suspension. The idea behind it: The Bomber is intended to offer Fox expertise at an entry-level price, as the cheaper Fox forks are only available on complete bikes, not for retrofitting.
We rode the fork in the 29er version with 160 millimetres of travel on an enduro bike. The response behaviour is fluffy, the comfort is high. The fork has good travel, although not quite as confident as the current top models from Fox or Rockshox. The low-speed compression stage can be infinitely adjusted using the handy dial on the right fork leg, right up to the lockout. This is great on long tarmac climbs or in situations where counterpressure is more important than the last ounce of comfort.
