Pedelec drives have now reached a very high level. It is not only the mechanics that have become significantly more reliable and smoother. Sophisticated software now also controls the motor power, customised to the intended use and type of rider. This allows pedelec riders to choose a drive that suits their personal preferences. If a motor delivers a lot of power to the rear wheel even with little pedalling force and a low cadence, this is well suited to an energy-saving, more relaxed riding style. Other drives increase in proportion to the pedalling force and deliver their maximum power at high pedalling force and cadence - they are best suited to sporty riders.
The type of power delivery also has a direct influence on the energy consumption of the motors. If you are prepared to invest more leg power, you will get much further. This is why drives whose power increases slowly but steadily with the pedalling force are more economical than those that maximise even low pedal pressure. Some drive systems, for example from Bosch or Shimano, can be combined with electromechanically shiftable gear hubs or even automatic hubs - ideal for riders who want to ride as comfortably as possible.
Before buying, you should therefore find out about the motor characteristics of your desired bike from the bike dealer. The best way to find out whether the drive system really suits you is literally during a test ride.
