Some like it reduced and inconspicuous, others prefer a full range of features. The display on Shimano e-bike drives has so far made the former happy. It sits compactly and well protected behind the handlebars. Although it offers many display options, these are only of limited use in practice. Only one value is visible at a time on the small display, making it difficult to change the display while riding.
The new E-Tube-Ride app changes all that. It mirrors all the information on the mobile phone display. The user interface can be customised so that the user always has the values that are most important to them at a glance. The app can currently be used on a mountain bike either with the EW-EN100 wireless unit (approx. 70 euros) or with the new 7000 display (SC-E7000). If you ride an E8000 display, you have to upgrade to the wireless option or the 7000 display (approx. 140 euros). The wireless option makes sense for all those who always attach their smartphone to the handlebars. Or for minimalists for whom even the slim Shimano display is too much. The wireless unit is attached to the brake line in front of the handlebars and uses two LEDs to provide information about the battery status and support mode. The installation instructions are described below.
Personalisation: The user decides which parameters should appear on the display.
Warnings: Battery almost empty, or error on the speed sensor? E-Tube Ride will let you know. Error codes are translated directly and the link to support is displayed.
Speedometer functions: Display of speed, cadence, daily kilometres, remaining range, etc.
Colour display: As with the Steps E8000 display, the support modes are colour-coded.
No updates: The E-Tube Project app is still available. It will continue to be used for software updates and customisation of the support modes.
Changing the display or installing the wireless unit is very easy. All you need is the TL-EW02 Di2 plug-in tool (approx. €2.50) and an Allen key. Below we describe how the change works. It doesn't matter whether you are changing to an E7000 display or the wireless unit. If you prefer your cockpit as minimalist as possible, you can even dispense with the shifter for motor control and change the support levels using a small switch on the wireless unit. However, this hardly works while riding, and the push-assist function is no longer available. In this case, the remaining plug output is fitted with a dummy plug.
