Successful engine update: Polini EP3+
90 Newton metres at its peak, weighing less than three kilograms. Even the facts of the new EP3+ from Italian engine manufacturer Polini sound promising.

However, the main difference to the previous EP3 model is said to lie in the electronics. The motor should now provide better support at high pedalling frequencies and react more quickly to the rider's input. The support power itself has also been fine-tuned. It should now be orientated more precisely and reproducibly to the rider's own performance, so that the motor power can be better controlled in difficult conditions.

With the new app, Polini has another ace up its sleeve and offers extensive customisation options. Three riding modes - Touring, Dynamic and Race - are preset ex works. Two further riding modes can be set in several parameters via the app.

Florentin Vesenbeckh has been on a mountain bike since he was ten years old. Even on his very first tour, he focussed on single trails - and even after more than 30 years in the saddle of an MTB, these are still the quintessence of biking for him. He spent his youth competing in various bike disciplines and later his cycling career was characterised by years as a riding technique coach. Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
