Extra juice from the pulley! Range extenders for e-bikes are very popular. This is because the compact additional batteries make it easy to adapt the battery capacity and therefore the range to the upcoming tour. Lightly equipped for the after-work ride and with additional power for the long tour. This extra is now also available for the Sram Eagle Powertrain. The small battery, which fits in the frame triangle like a water bottle, provides 250 watt hours.
A special feature of the range extender from Sram is its discharge logic. Because with two batteries on board, there is always the question of the order or logic in which the two energy sources are used up. Sram has come up with something special here that is not available with other e-drives. The Sram Eagle Powertrain only has two support levels. The moderate Range mode and the powerful Rally mode. The discharge of the additional battery is also linked to this. In Range mode, which is intended to collect range and save power on transfers, the range extender is used up first. If you switch to Rally mode, however, the main battery is tapped from the bike. This is to ensure that the drive really delivers full power in power mode. If the main battery is empty, it is no longer possible to switch to the powerful Rally mode.
A classic use case for this logic: the journey to the trail, mountain or bike park takes place in energy-saving range mode. Once there, the additional battery can theoretically be put to one side. The rider then has a lightweight bike with a fully charged battery for maximum riding performance and motor power. On the way home, the range extender is collected again and still provides enough power to get home relaxed. Anyone who likes to ride in bike or trail parks or on other trail loops can benefit from this. This scenario is less helpful on classic tours, but the concept should work here too.
The Range Extender is compatible with all bikes with Sram Eagle Powertrain - regardless of whether they have a 720 or 630 battery. The weight of the small clip-on battery is said to be 1.5 kilos. If the additional battery is not on the bike, a special bottle cage can be quickly and easily clipped onto the attachment for the range extender. The additional battery is charged using the Powertrain charger. An optional Y-cable is also available to charge the main battery and range extender at the same time.
The selection of bikes with Sram drivetrains is currently still limited. Propain, Gasgas, Transition and Nukeproof rely on the motor concept from Schweinfurt. You can find all the information and details about the e-MTBs in the links:
