A belt drive is so popular precisely because it works differently to a traditional bicycle chain. No oil, hardly any wear and significantly less dirt on the drive – it is precisely these characteristics that make carbon belts particularly attractive for e-bikes. The best way to look after it is therefore not by lubricating it, but by keeping it clean. Water, a soft brush and the occasional removal of coarse dirt are usually more than enough. Treating your belt with oil as you would a chain will not make it last any longer – in fact, it may even impair its performance.
For years, the bicycle chain has been one of the parts that requires regular attention. It runs over many small links, which wear out quickly without lubrication. Oil reduces friction between the chain links and protects against corrosion.
A belt drive works in a completely different way. Instead of numerous moving metal parts, it uses a closed carbon-fibre toothed belt that runs over special pulleys. Power is transmitted via the teeth – not via moving joints.
That is precisely why a belt drive does not require lubrication.
Modern bicycle belts are made from durable materials such as carbon fibre and plastic composites. The integrated tension strands ensure high load-bearing capacity, whilst the outer coating protects the belt from wear and tear.
Unlike a chain, there are no rollers, pins or links that need to be lubricated. A lubricant therefore offers no benefit.
On the contrary: oil alters the surface of the belt and can cause dirt to stick to it more easily.
The most common mistake: out of habit, people treat an e-bike with a belt drive as if it were a standard bicycle with a chain. The spray can is at the ready, a few drops of oil are applied to the belt – and that should, in theory, make it run more smoothly.
The opposite may happen.
Oil forms a sticky film on the surface. Dust, sand and small particles of dirt stick to it more easily and get trapped between the belt and the pulley. Once there, they can increase wear and cause annoying noises.
Furthermore, an oiled surface can affect the grip between the belt and the pulleys. This does not improve the belt’s performance; in fact, it may even cause it to slip more easily under certain circumstances.
A belt drive requires very little attention. That is precisely one of its greatest advantages. Nevertheless, it is worth checking it regularly.

For stubborn dirt, it’s usually enough to a soft brush. Harsh cleaning agents, solvents or oil-based products must not be used on the belts.
If chain oil has accidentally got onto the belt, there’s no need to panic. The belt doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced.

A belt drive isn’t some kind of maintenance-free magic trick – but it does fundamentally change the way you look after your bike. Whilst a chain needs regular lubrication, a carbon belt thrives on exactly the opposite: dry and clean. The most common mistake stems from habit. Anyone who has been oiling chains for decades automatically reaches for the spray can. With a belt drive, however, restraint is the better strategy. The most important rule is therefore: Oil the chain, clean the belt. Anyone who understands this simple distinction will benefit from a quiet, long-lasting and particularly straightforward e-bike drive system.
