The aftermarket is flourishing. Not everyone wants to swap their existing mountain bike for a new e-mountain bike. Aftermarket motors offer an alternative. However, the differences in performance, weight, power and range of functions are considerable. BionX, Vivax, XDreamlite (XDL) and EGO-Kit offer very different riding experiences. The installations - anything but trivial - should be carried out by a trained specialist dealer. If you don't want to screw the wrong motor onto your bike, check the following points before converting the motor:
1. pedelec, S-pedelec or just throttle grip? BionX and Vivax offer pedelec function, XDL offers pedelec and S pedelec as well as throttle grip. EGO-Kit offers throttle grip, pedalling is possible on a case-by-case basis depending on the gear ratio.
2. does the frame hold? And is it approved for retrofitting? Whether a frame can withstand the forces of a retrofit motor can only be determined in the long term by testing it yourself. As a rule, the warranty or guarantee of the frame or bike manufacturer is void, unless the manufacturer authorises the retrofitting of specific motors (e.g. Alutech: EGO-Kit) or offers complete bikes itself (Vivax).
3rd drive: 11-speed? Too delicate! Back to the good old 9-speed system. With up to 3400 watts or 4.6 horsepower, the EGO-Kit motor whirls through the rear derailleur, sprocket set, chain and rear hub.
4. intended use? With EGO-Kit and XDReamlite, it's best to head to the bike park. These motors pack a powerful punch. On tour, BionX, Vivax and XDReamlite are loyal companions thanks to their pedelec functionality. Also: S-pedelecs are subject to different national legislation. EGO kit riders should only use private roads and bike parks.
5. motor power, battery capacity, range? The strength of the motor and the capacity of the battery determine the range. The following applies to all manufacturers: take the most powerful battery.
6. battery on the frame or in the rucksack? A matter of taste.
