At Eurobike 2023, Pinion with the MGU E1.12 the big hit. A motor with an integrated twelve-speed gearbox is set to give wear-prone derailleur systems a run for their money. The problem is that, as is typical for the brand, the Pinion motor is quite expensive and definitely not to be found in the entry-level segment. Drive system specialist Gobao from China is now launching several motors with integrated gearboxes.
The X1P ‘Power’ variant, with 150 Nm and a peak power output of 1500 watts, is said to be on a par with even Avinox thanks to its enormous power. The X1P’s gearbox offers a gear ratio range of 500 per cent – which is also of interest to mountain bikers. The ‘standard’ X1 variant is said to deliver 1,200 watts and offers a gear ratio range of 400 per cent. The gearbox is continuously variable in both motors just like an Enviolo. This promises an optimal gear ratio for every application and is likely to be very appealing as an automatic version too.
Lightweight construction has always been a core competence at Rotwild. The Dieburg-based manufacturer has been producing nothing but e-bikes for years, yet a few particularly lightweight models, such as the R.X 275 Downcountry e-bike or the lightweight R.X 375, weighing 18 kilos and delivering full engine power produced. According to the first e-MTBs with an Avinox motor and a removable battery (reviewed here) Rotwild has now followed this up with the R.XX, a lightweight bike that harnesses the full potential of the Avinox system. It offers 160/145 millimetres of suspension travel. Despite being fully equipped for trail riding – though without lightweight tyres – the weight is said to be just around 20 kilos. The price is typically high for Rotwild: the top-of-the-range model costs 11,990 euros.
Minimalist single-speed e-bikes are currently enjoying a resurgence. Lightweight urban e-bikes (reviewed here) About compact wheels right through to sporty single-speed bikes such as the new Citylite:On from Canyon. Singlespeed e-bikes are rapidly gaining popularity as a low-maintenance, lightweight and affordable type of e-bike. For those who still don’t want to do without a slightly variable gear ratio, here’s the solution. The two-speed planetary gearbox is designed for use with hub motors and is mounted on the rear axle. Said to be more affordable than standard gearboxes and more durable than derailleur systems, it is designed to expand the versatility of e-bikes with rear motors and belt drives, thereby making such bikes appealing to a wider audience.
Right opposite Gobao is Avinox, a driving force in innovation. With up to 150 Nm and a peak power output of 1,500 watts, this DJI subsidiary has set the technical benchmark in recent years. Now the motor specialists are sending a clear message: we, too, are working on a motor with an integrated gearbox!
Specific details won’t be revealed at Eurobike 2026 just yet, but there are a number of prototypes featuring the Avinox MG Concept on display. Canyon, Mondraker, Forbidden and Commencal are showcasing frames fitted with the motor-gear unit. The drivetrain uses a mix of Gates belts and heavy-duty chains. Anyone familiar with Avinox can surmise that, as is typical for the company, the performance is likely to be high. The design is extremely compact.
