Battle of the giants: E-MTB motors Bosch versus Brose
With the new Performance CX, Bosch wants to raise the bar for e-MTB motors. Brose counters with the popular Drive SMag and a new complete system. Who will win the battle of the motor giants?

The Transalp Challenge as the acid test for the new generation of motors. As a route photographer, I was able to gain metres in altitude and experience with Brose's Drive SMag and the new Bosch Performance CX in extreme use. But that was only part of our big comparison test between the two stars of the new generation of motors. They also had to prove their abilities in a direct comparison on defined test routes. For example, on an alpine trail near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Here, a selective scree path climbs 750 metres in altitude, where the differences in response, modulation and maximum power were impressively noticeable at key points.

And last but not least, the test subjects had to undergo various tests on the EMTB roller test bench. On the one hand, to underpin the practical tests with hard facts. Secondly, to test the reach height and derating behaviour (temperature-related reduction in power) under comparable and constant laboratory conditions.

Brose was able to provide us with the new complete system including its own battery and display for testing - the first real complete system from the Berlin-based automotive specialists. With its 630 watt-hour battery, the arrangement is therefore directly comparable to the Bosch Performance CX system, which we were able to test on a Cannondale Habit Neo during the Transalp Challenge and later on various other bikes.

You can download the complete test report with all data, note tables and laboratory results as a PDF in the download area below.

Brose Drive SMag complete system: With the arrangement of drive, battery and display, Brose is offering a complete system for the first time. The new SMag motor has increased in power and comes in a lightweight magnesium housing. The battery is designed for integration in the down tube and has 630 watt hours. Brose provided us with a sample bike with the complete system for the test; bikes with the new battery will probably not be available in shops until autumn 2020.Photo: Hersteller Brose Drive SMag complete system: With the arrangement of drive, battery and display, Brose is offering a complete system for the first time.
