A tyre lever is ideal for scraping the rollers free. Then crank backwards and clean the roller moved by the chain with a cloth soaked in white spirit.
Spray Chain cleaner, brush it in and leave it to work for a while, then wash it off. Crank the chain backwards through a dry cloth (possibly a cloth soaked in benzine). Then oil.
Degreaser or bicycle cleaner can also help here. Spray on, leave to work, wipe with a cloth tooth by tooth. If there is a lot of dirt: Remove the chainrings and clean them individually.
Use a brush to spread the sprayed cleaner between the chains and sprockets. Leave it to work for a few minutes so that it reaches every last corner. Then wash off.
Greasy dirt builds up between the pinion discs. Use a cleaning rake to remove even the coarsest dirt from these areas.
A tightly stretched, thicker fabric on the sprocket set helps to fish the last remnants out of the gaps. Soak the fabric with a little white spirit.
