Rather than simply continuing to inflate the marketing bubble with hot air, the Canadian components manufacturer OneUp has set itself a more noble goal: the 34-strong team aims to produce only products that they themselves would buy – innovative, durable and functional. Many of their products have already impressed us in our tests. Now their next no-nonsense product is set to launch.
Following the launch of its own hubs, OneUp is expanding its range for the first time to include a complete wheelset. The Canadian company has deliberately avoided technical frills or excessive weight-saving measures, focusing instead on a design concept intended to impress above all with its robustness and suitability for everyday use.
The design of the wheelset is particularly interesting. Instead of using identical rims at the front and rear, OneUp has adopted a different approach. The front wheel is designed with 28 spokes and, thanks to a modified design, offer slightly more give, thereby improving traction and ride comfort. The rear wheel, on the other hand, relies on 32 spokes, reinforced valve seats and extra material on the rim flange and sidewall to withstand the higher stresses encountered during trail riding.
The rims are made of 6069 aluminium and have an internal width of 30 millimetres – the standard size for modern trail and enduro wheels today. In addition, OneUp uses an asymmetrical rim profile with a 3-millimetre offset in the drilling pattern.
At the heart of the wheelset are the familiar OneUp Hubs. The hubs are fitted with a freewheel with 44 rest stops and a freewheel body made from 7075 aluminium. The design utilises classic J-bend spokes, which simplifies the supply of spare parts and makes repairs on the road easier.
The wheels are supplied with a pre-fitted XDR freehub. Microspline and HG versions are also available.
When it comes to tubeless tyres, OneUp also takes a practical approach. The wheels are supplied with 3M wheel rim tape and the in-house Fillmore valves supplied. The valves are based on technology licensed by Reserve and are said to offer a higher air flow rate than traditional Presta valves. At the same time, they are designed to reduce the risk of valves becoming blocked by sealant.
The new aluminium wheels are available as 29-inch wheelset as well as in a MX configuration available. Furthermore, OneUp explicitly approves these wheels for use on e-MTBs.
With the OneUp Aluminium Wheels The Canadians are proving that exciting bikes don’t necessarily have to be made of carbon. Rather than focusing on superlatives, OneUp prioritises well-thought-out details, maintenance-friendly standards and a robust design.
In particular, the distinct design of the front and rear wheels shows that careful consideration has been given to the actual stresses encountered whilst riding. Added to this are practical features such as Fillmore valves, the brand’s own hubs and e-MTB certification. With a price of 599 euros The Aluminium Wheels are priced significantly lower than many premium wheelsets on the market, without compromising on modern technology.
