Battery revolution?
BMZ, a specialist in integrated battery system solutions, has developed a new cell. This cell is said to offer 60 per cent more capacity and 400 per cent more discharge current.

The new 3Tron rechargeable battery with 21700 format cells (21 millimetre diameter, 70 millimetre length) from BMZ is set to set new standards in terms of capacity and discharge current. "This cell exceeds the usable battery capacity of conventional cells in 18650 format (18 millimetres in diameter, 65 millimetres long) many times over: 60 per cent more capacity with 400 per cent more discharge current," says Sven Bauer, Managing Director at BMZ. BMZ GmbH in Karlstein am Main enthusiastic about the new cell.

The service life of the 3Tron battery is also said to have increased thanks to the new cells. "The 3Tron has more capacity and needs to be recharged less often. This increases the service life to up to twelve years," Bauer continues. Each charging cycle ages batteries further. Whether this approach will also work for e-MTBs and pedelecs remains to be seen. After all, most bikers will utilise the increased capacity and set off on longer tours.

For the production of the super cell, BMZ is cooperating with the world's leading cell manufacturer Sony. Its manufacturing expertise, with over 300 million cells produced annually, is intended to guarantee maximum quality. The 3Tron battery will be assembled at BMZ - Europe's new Gigafactory. With an area of 55,000 square metres, this is the largest battery factory in Europe. In co-operation with Batteryuniversity GmbH, BMZ carries out external quality and safety tests.

3Tron from BMZ sounds very promising: the battery's inner values are particularly impressive. Thanks to an increase in active cell material, stronger conductors and the highest quality materials, 3Tron is said to increase energy yield by 50 per cent. According to the manufacturer, the lower internal resistance enables 68 per cent more power.
