The ultra-distance cyclist Lael Wilcox has made cycling history with her round-the-world bike ride. Now a new film is bringing this impressive achievement to the big screen. "Lael Rides Around the World", the work of photojournalist Rugile Kaladyte, documents Wilcox's record-breaking 108-day, 12-hour and 12-minute ride around the globe.
The premiere of the film took place on 10 April at the Sea Otter Classic, one of the most important cycling festivals in North America. The film then went on tour to other cities in North America and Europe to give cycling fans a unique insight into this extraordinary achievement.
Rugile Kaladyte, Wilcox's wife and a renowned photojournalist from Tucson, accompanied the athlete throughout the entire circumnavigation. With her camera, she captured not only the spectacular landscapes and physical challenges, but also the emotional highs and lows of such an extreme endeavour.
Lael Wilcox himself describes the film as Kaladyte's own feat of endurance: "The ride was one thing, but the film is Rue's biggest video project to date." This statement emphasises the complexity and scope of the film documentary, which goes far beyond simply recording the route.
A particular feature of Wilcox's record-breaking ride was the support she received from cycling enthusiasts from all over the world. Thousands of people joined her on various stages, which gave the project an additional community dimension.
The film promises to capture these moments of solidarity and shared experience and bring them closer to the viewers. "Lael Rides Around the World" not only aims to document the sporting achievement, but also to paint a portrait of the global cycling community.
Visitors to the events not only had an insight into the film, but also the opportunity to take a piece of the journey home with them. Each participant received a souvenir poster and, while stocks lasted, there was the option to purchase an accompanying photo book.
For all those who did not have the opportunity to attend one of the screenings in person, there is now a digital alternative: from today, 28 May, the film will be available on Sram's YouTube channel. Here is the trailer:
The digital release also allows the global audience to follow Wilcox's journey. If you like, you are encouraged to follow the social media channels of Sram, Zipp, Lael Wilcox and Rugile Kaladyte to make sure you don't miss any updates and exclusive content.
The realisation of such an ambitious project would hardly have been possible without the support of well-known sponsors. In addition to main sponsor Sram, companies such as Specialized, Rapha, Komoot, Quad Lock and Revelate Designs have also become involved.
This collaboration between athlete, filmmaker and industry shows the great interest in exceptional cycling performances and their documentation. The involvement of these brands also emphasises the importance of Wilcox's record-breaking ride for the entire cycling community.
