It’s great to see that Bosch’s hub motor could make high-quality branded e-bikes such as the Speeddrive more affordable. However, only a test will reveal whether the heavy motor on the rear wheel delivers convincing handling on a bike with a sporty feel.
Bosch describes the Hub Line as a stylish, smart and powerful drive system for the city. Key specifications: 45 Nm of torque, up to 400 watts of power, a motor weight of around 2.3 kg and compact integration into the rear wheel hub. The Speeddrive’s frame retains its sleek silhouette. Anyone seeing the bike would not recognise it as an e-bike at first glance.
The engine disengages completely at speeds above 25 km/h. Anyone picking up speed on a town road will then continue to accelerate unchecked.
A key selling point of the Speeddrive R600 is its removable battery. This makes a real difference, particularly in everyday urban life, where garages and secure parking spaces are scarce. The 360 Wh battery can be removed from the frame by lifting it upwards – and charged separately at home. Bosch states that the range with the 360 Wh battery in Eco mode is around 89 kilometres. That’s easily enough for a week’s worth of commuting in the city.
As part of the smart Bosch system, over-the-air updates, anti-theft protection, navigation and personalisation via the eBike Flow app are all included. This, too, is no longer a luxury – but a must for anyone who uses their bike every day and wants to keep it safe.
The Speeddrive R600 is available in two frame designs. The diamond frame is for those who prefer classic proportions. The trapezoidal version with a lowered top tube for easier mounting and dismounting – familiar from CENTURION’s previous Speeddrive models with Bosch SX drive. Both cost exactly 2,499 euros. Both come fully equipped for everyday use.
Under 2,500 euros, two frame options, Bosch connectivity: the Speeddrive R600 is a brilliant choice for anyone who cycles around town every day and wants motor assistance without breaking the bank.
What do you think, dear readers: mid-drive or hub motor? Which drive system is better for everyday use? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
