Wrenching tips: Service for Shimano pedals
Shimano pedals are known among bikers for their durability. If they do start to creak and grind under your pedalling, you can make them quiet with just a few simple steps.

Shimano SPD pedals you can service yourself in just a few steps. We show you how to service Shimano MTB pedals yourself:

MAINTENANCE PEDALS

INFO 1 There are two different types of cleats for Shimano mountain bike pedals. The black SH51 cleats have a single release. This means that the pedal is released simply by turning the heel to the side.

 2. the silver version with the designation SH56 has a multiple release. This means that the pedal can also be released by turning the heel upwards.

 3. the threads of the two pedals are not the same. A left-hand thread on the left side and a right-hand thread on the right side prevent the pedals from coming loose by themselves when pedalling.

 4. be careful when screwing them in: which pedal is mounted on which side of the crank is indicated on the pedal body. If in doubt, the screw for adjusting the release hardness must always point to the rear.

5 The direction in which the axle can be released from the pedal to the service is indicated by a small arrow on the outside of the pedal body.
