Laying the shift cables
Expensive gears only work as well as their cables: Dust, dirt and splash water are particularly hard on the gear cables in autumn. A change often works wonders. Our workshop shows you how to get your gears shifting smoothly again.

THE TOOL

Without special tools: Apart from the Bowden cable pliers, no extra tools are required to replace the shift cables and outer casings. An Allen key, torque spanner, cutter, awl and side cutters are all you need.

Four screwdriver tips

1. hands off of outer brake cable housings! They have a different inner life and restrict the shifting function!

2. switch Never replace only the outer covers or the shift cable, but always replace both, including the end caps.

3. if you are using end sleeves made of metal, grease them before installing them in the pull stops on the frame.

4. on the first trips the outer casings and cables settle quite a bit. Readjust the gears!

The most important tips

A) Determine the length:
When laying the outer sheaths, make sure the bends are soft - as short as possible and as long as necessary. Either shorten the new covers to the same length as the old ones. Or shorten the outer covers so that the handlebars can be folded in on both sides as far as possible.

Step by step with ride-on trains from Gore

Shift to the smallest sprocket and chainring, open the gear lever and remove all cables and cables. Turn back all adjusting screws and shorten the new covers to the same length as the old ones.
