Just a hobby? For many, biking is much more than that. That's why there is a wide range of gift options for Christmas. Adrian Kaether, editor at EMTB, gives recommendations for (e-)mountain bikers in the 30, 50 and 100 euro price categories.

The time before Christmas is ideal for shopping. However, finding the perfect gift can be stressful. This doesn't have to be the case, at least if the recipient is a keen cyclist. Quite the opposite: because there are plenty of good gift ideas and with the current offers, browsing through the options can even be really fun. And we can reassure you: Biking may be an expensive hobby, but a good gift doesn't have to be a great suspension fork or a set of carbon wheels for a four-figure sum. You can even find practical and attractive options for less than 30 euros. Here are some personal recommendations from EMTB editor Adrian Kaether.

1st F100 organic bike cleaner for €19.90

Cleaner? I don't need it, a garden hose and brush will do just as well. That was my opinion for years until a mate gave me a bottle of bike cleaner. And the fact is: I hadn't seen my bike this fresh and shiny for a long time. After removing coarse dirt with plenty of water and a gentle spray from the garden hose, the cleaner is simply applied with a brush or sprayed directly onto the bike. Then leave it to work properly and wash it off.

The cleaner also reaches places that are difficult to reach with a brush and also removes the fine film of dirt that remains after normal cleaning with water from the garden hose. Cleaners are now also available in various environmentally friendly versions. The Organic cleaner from F100 is a pioneer in this field. It consists largely of renewable raw materials, is acid-free and does not attack the material, but still cleans very effectively. Not a must after every tour, but nice to have if you want to see your beloved bike really shine again.

The F100 is particularly effective and even environmentally friendly. A clear tip for anyone who values a sparkling clean bike. - Adrian Kaether, EMTB editor

3. newmen aluminium lubrication cranks for € 58

Lubricating the chain on an e-mountainbike is one of those maintenance tasks that is simply unnecessarily annoying. And unfortunately, it's also one of those that is particularly annoying if you keep putting it off. This is because the 85 Newton metres and up to 600 watts from the motor are added to the human power and grind the expensive and sensitive chain drive down to uselessness in no time at all. Unfortunately, because of the freewheel in the motor, you always have to turn the heavy bike round to clean and lubricate the chain - watch out for the display! - or hang it in the assembly stand. Or you have to turn the chain drive backwards by hand on the chainring. Not exactly comfortable either.

Some people use an Allen key for bolted chainrings or special lubrication tools as a solution, but these have to be reassembled and disassembled each time. Newmen has gone one step further and has simply integrated a small pin into an aluminium crank. This allows you to simply bypass the freewheel on an e-bike at the touch of a button and clean and lubricate the chain as you would on a bike without a motor. At 430 grams, the weight of the crank itself is perfectly acceptable, and the price of 58 euros is very fair. Unfortunately, it's only available for Bosch for the time being, but other systems are to follow.

Newmen Forge Crank Bosch Gen 4/5: the facts

  • Material: Aluminium
  • Length: 165 millimetres
  • Compatible with Bosch Performance CX from MY 2020
  • Weight: 430 grammes
  • Price: 58 Euro
Of course, you can also lubricate your chain on an e-MTB in other ways. But with the e-bike crank from Newmen, you can finally do it without annoying aids and the price-performance ratio for the crank itself is also top. - Adrian Kaether, EMTB editor
