BIKE helps: Treat carbon rims correctly
Carbon wheels are not only super light and stiff, but also expensive and unforgiving if mistreated. Great care must be taken during assembly.

Never use tyre levers to mount the tyre. Using, for example, dishwashing liquid as a lubricant, the tyre slips into position more easily when inflating. If a compressor is used when fitting tubeless tyres, the maximum pressure must be reduced below the rim manufacturer's specification using a pressure reducer! Excessive pressure can irrevocably damage the carbon structure. Damage caused is often not immediately visible and can lead to failure when the tyre is in use. For example, the rim flank can break away. If you transport or store your bike in a car at the height of summer, you must let air out of the tyres so that the rim is not damaged by the rising pressure in the heat.

In this video you can see what it looks like when a carbon rim bursts if the air pressure is too high (here 8.4 bar!):

The top 3 tips for handling carbon rims

  1. Anyone who buys expensive carbon wheels should definitely read the operating instructions and adhere to the information contained therein, especially with regard to the maximum air pressure.
  2. Carbon wheels are also sensitive during transport; they are stored in wheel bags at the top of the luggage in the car, for example. If the structure is damaged, the rims can suddenly fail completely. Check regularly for damage!
  3. Never inflate with a compressor or, if not otherwise possible, work with a pressure reducer.
