If you puncture a tyre during a race, you lose valuable positions. With a CO² pump, the tyre can be re-inflated in seconds. We tested six cartridges for MTB racers.

BBB Easyair BMP-34

Although the thick neoprene cover of the Easyair is difficult to put on and take off, it effectively protects against frosty fingers. Before tapping the cartridge, the metering wheel should always be well closed. The micro pump then inflates tyres safely and without air loss. As there is no transport lock, the cartridge should be screwed in very carefully.

Crank Brothers Sterling CO² kit

For just 20 euros, the Americans supply a pump with two cartridges. Screw in, attach, press through - operation is extremely simple and works without major air loss. However, the pump head has no metering wheel and no transport lock and is only suitable for Sclaverand valves. Unfortunately, large 25 gram cartridges do not fit into the holder.

Pro Micro CO² adapter

The small plastic pump cannot quite keep up with the competition in terms of workmanship, but it fulfils its purpose. The cartridge is easy to screw in and can be emptied completely with a little pressure on the valve. Only a small amount of air escapes when screwing it in. A cartridge should always be emptied completely, as the pump head is not permanently leak-proof.

SKS Airbuster

The Airbuster is the top-of-the-range model and is supplied complete with cartridge, cold protection and frame holder. The high-quality aluminium housing has a transport lock and a rotary dispenser, but cools down considerably during filling! A minimal amount of air escapes when the cartridge is screwed in. The valve head must be fitted carefully for filling.

Topeak Micro AirBooster

Topeak's Mini Rocket is extremely light, minimalist and foolproof to use. However, nothing works here without long-fingered gloves - there is no protection against the cold. In addition, the cartridge is difficult to screw into the angular head. By applying light pressure to the valve head, the CO² flows into the tyre without loss, but you can't get the cartridge completely empty.

Xtreme Air Coach light CO² dosing unit

The affordable Air Coach can hold two cartridges at the same time and is also suitable for re-inflation thanks to its practical metering device. The valve head encloses Schrader and Sclaverand valves equally tightly and inflates the tyre without any noticeable loss of air. A dust cap protects the cartridge holder, but the
cartridge itself is unfortunately not supplied >> available here.

RELOAD

CO² cartridges are not a cheap pleasure and are far from environmentally friendly and suitable for everyday use. No wonder that the high-pressure tanks are mainly used in races. If the charge is shot and there is no mini-pump on board, you should choose your line carefully or hope for the mercy of your fellow racers in the event of another breakdown. There are also a few things to bear in mind when handling: 16 gram standard cartridges are not sufficient for extremely wide tyres, and if you use the cartridge without gloves, you run the risk of a cold burn.

Price for 3 x 16 grams: approx. 6 euros | Maximum tyre pressure for 29 x 2.25 inch: approx. 1.8 bar
