The brake disc rings
What can you do if the disc brake rings at a certain speed range? Expert Riko Vodan gives advice.

Question from B. Kratzer: "My disc brakes ring at around 20 km/h, how can I fix this?"

Answer from Riko Vodan: This phenomenon occurs from time to time with disc sizes from 180 millimetres. You can hear the ringing especially when cornering fast on tarmac. This is caused by vibrations that build up throughout the bike, depending on the equipment. Hubs, forks, tyres and the frame have an influence, for example, but of course also the brake calliper, the adapter and the quality of the disc brake mount. Unfortunately, it is impossible to test all conceivable combinations in advance. An often effective tip to stop the noise is the tyre pressure: In our experience, it sometimes helps to let a little air out of the tyre. In some cases, we have also found that there was too much brake fluid in the system. With brakes that have been in use for a long time, wear occasionally also plays a role, in which case the piston sealing rings should be checked."
