Question from BIKE reader F. Kummer: I have problems with the SRAM XX rear brake on my new bike. The brake rubs and makes loud noises. The original brake pads are fitted. I have already tried some from Swiss Stopp, but to no avail. I have also bled the brake thoroughly. But now I'm at a loss, maybe you can help me?
Answer from Julian Oswald, SRAM MTB PR Coordinator:
There could be the following solutions to the problem: Firstly, it is very important to brake the bike correctly. The brake pad has a certain composition/coating. If the brake pad and disc are new, they must first be run in together. A light coating abrasion should be finely and, importantly, evenly distributed on the disc. This gives the brake the right bite and also ensures that there is no jerking or noise when braking. If the brake is not evenly braked, it is possible that this brake pad layer is unevenly distributed. This can result in noises or jerking. Tips on correct braking can be found in the SRAM-XX operating instructions (see PDF download below, p. 69).
It could also be that the brake is not correctly aligned with the disc. If you look at the brake shoes from above in the caliper, they should really be parallel to the disc. If the front or rear part is a little closer or further away, this can lead to oscillations, vibrations and noise. So my tip: fit new brake pads, clean the discs properly (brake cleaner), align the brakes correctly. And then re-align everything together.
