Can you convert a Scott hardtail to disc brakes? BIKE test boss Christoph Listmann gives the answer.

Reader questionI have a Scott Hardtail Pro Limited and would like to convert from a Magura HS 33 to a disc brake. Can I fit any disc size and any brake caliper? The frame is from 2005 and the hubs are designed for discs.

Answer from Christoph Listmann, BIKE Test Manager: Converting to disc brakes is not a problem as long as the frame (rear triangle) and fork have a mounting for the brake calliper. The necessary adapters are available from specialist dealers and may also be supplied with the disc brakes. As far as the disc size is concerned, we would recommend 160 mm diameter at the front and rear for a hardtail; for alpine use or heavy riders, a 180 mm disc at the front is also advisable.
